I focused on the main theme of acceptance and neutrality for the name of the company, hence the names green light (which I thought could be the signature colour as it is not generally tied with a gender) and every. However I looked back on my research on gender in make up and one of the articles I found contained this quote:
"A man celebrating himself in makeup is a subversive act."The brand is focusing on acceptance, and even though many people nowadays are more accepting of men in make up - the idea still counter acts gender norms. Hence my decision to name the brand 'subvert' - the definition being to 'undermine the power and authority of (an established system or institution).'
Logo sketches:
For my logo sketches I initially wanted to play on the idea of subversion. Most make up
brands have logotypes - for example L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, Olay etc. So I began to experiment with symbols. The gender symbols came to mind first, so I included them in my experimentation - particularly the symbol for gender neutrality.
Gender neutral = Colour neutral?
I want to avoid gendered colours for my brand as it provides limitations. I do not agree with the concept of males supposed to like blue and females pink, so using either colour in the brand (including packaging) would not be appropriate to promote a genderless brand.
My initial ideas are to use a monochrome colour palette, either black and white, or shades of grey, so the packaging will not appear as if it is aimed towards a particular gender. If I needed a pop of colour I am leaning towards green and yellow - many expecting parents paint their babies rooms yellow if they do not know what gender they are having.
